Twitter-led Moldova Protests
The news of youth protests in Communist-led Moldova – organized through Twitter – could be breaking point for the new communications technology.
LAS VEGAS, NV (April 8, 2009) – I’m on Twitter but, like Facebook, I find most of the message boring and silly. I really don’t care that you’re going home to feed your dog or you’re tired.
However, these new communication technologies are great breaking news systems. We saw it happen during the attacks in Mumbai in December, 2008. Twitter was also an additional 911 system for some of the hostages in India.
Now we hear that Twitter helped mobilize violent protests in the former Soviet Republic of Moldova. Moldovan youth stormed government buildings. They were reportedly upset over elections that kept Communists in power, the loss of jobs, and the lack of communication with Europe.
This could be an historic moment.
First, it shows how the new technology democratizes societies.
Second, it also shows that these technologies need to be embraced by governments so “crowd mentality” doesn’t get out of hand.
Third, oppressive governments will ban such social networking technologies to try to maintain power.
